The paper addresses the problem of the paradoxical adoption by the nineteenth-century liberal state of a Catholic missionary organisation, the Obra de la Propagación de la Fé (OPFé), as an instrument for incorporating the Amazonian Oriente into the Peruvian nation. The idea was first proposed in 1840 by the Bishop of Maynas to the Peruvian Government, and received official approval despite the anti-clerical spirit of the times. It failed because of political upheavals and lack of resources, but was successfully revived by the Peruvian Catholic Congress of 1896 and approved by the Government of Nicolás de Piérola. The author describes the functioning of the OPFé and analyses its relationship to the emergence of the national state
