Max Weber believed that one of the most important and personal questions confronting every human being was the question about the 'sense of the world'. This is the age-old question of how an all-powerful and totally benign creator could allow such senseless suffering in this world. This is the question of 'theodicy' and Weber not only examined it from a scholarly point of view, but he treated it from his own highly personal experience as well
