It has been remarked that the single storey cottage has a wide distribution but a marked local incidence. In Central West Yorkshire the single storey cottage has been an important element in the pattern of vernacular building, and must have been one of the commonest types of dwelling before the terrace house. For long a feature of the rural landscape they now face the threat of destruction with the encroachment of the urban area and the delnand for improved housing conditions. Embodied in these cottages are the last vestiges of the regional building tradition and some evidence of the way the peasants lived in the last three hundred years
