In 1980 Martyn Brown reported in Folk Life on the already then fast-vanishing activity of mud-horse fishing, a mud-horse being a sledge-like conveyance which fishermen in the Severn Estuary would push before them when crossing the tidal mud on their way to their nets and returning with the fish and shrimps they had collected there. At the time, there were only two mud-horse fishermen left, operating from Stolford near Bridgwater, though a hundred years before there had been many, working not merely from Stolford, but also from other points along the coasts of Somerset and South Wales. A relic of this activity was a mud-sledge acquired by the National Museum of Wales in 1931. It was virtually identical to the Somerset mud-horses
