It is surprising that the possibly unique and certainly fascinating mud horse fishing of the Severn Estuary has attracted so little attention from local historians and researchers. On the northern shore the National Museum of Wales acquired a ‘mud sledge’ as early as 1931, and published a comprehensive report of the fishing technique practised with it. In Somerset, where research into so many similar activities has been badly neglected, the only information about ‘mud horses’ is to be found in occasional brief newspaper articles, the odd paragraph in local guide books and a regional television newsreel. It is therefore fortunate that two fishermen at the isolated village of Stolford have continued to use ‘mud horses’, and that they are both conscious of the need to record their work
