The Gaelic League, a cultural organisation involved with linguistic revivalism, was a crucial influence in the formation of the young men and women who became the rulers of post‐independence Ireland. It originated in an attempt to get Protestants and Catholics to work together by avoiding the divisions of Irish politics. It attracted many who saw in it a potential defence against the vulgarity and secularism of English popular culture. Eventually, forces based on separatism and clericalism succeeded in taking it over after it had developed into a mass movement These used it as a stalking‐horse for their brand of revolutionary nationalist politics. The ideology of the League had a permanent impact on the politics of independent Ireland
