A multi-disciplinary research program, focusing on Early Dynastic Pottery from the Diyala Region in Iraq, has contributed both to culture historical and methodological aspects of the archaeological exploration of ancient Mesopotamia. Trace-element analysis is found to have great potential as a tool for discriminating pottery workshop traditions. Microscopic section analysis is suggested as an ideal sampling procedure for subsequent scientific analysis
