Is Soft Paternalism Ethically Legitimate The promise of soft paternalism is to use behavioural economics to nudge people towards better decisions without compromising their freedom. The research presented here addresses the ethical legitimacy of nudges . Thus far, the criticism is rooted mainly in utilitarian or Kantian ethics. Aiming to systematize the normative debate in order to make it more productive, we suggest a typology of nudges according to the psychological mechanisms they use. Crucial in the evaluation of nudges is the trade-off between welfare and freedom, two of the core values of our society that are often pitted against each other, as well as the balance between the individual and society
