Violence in school environments today has become an object of international concern. Its defining characteristics are familiar. But it is now obvious that verbal assaults and insults are the most predominant everyday features of the violent atmosphere in our educational institutions. The point is to understand the human and interactional mechanisms of '' verbal violence'' as shaped by the social implications of linguistic practices. The next step will be to show how school environments can still be acted upon and how these practices which have become commonplace can be approached in new ways as symbols of a '' displaced'' quest for identity
