This article reviews the content of government regulations giving the right of leave of absence to salaried persons for the purpose of a skills assessment. This procedure officializes the notion of an educative conception of guidance for adults, and makes it possible. Beyond practical aspects, the question is raised of the various conceptions implict to guidance. A contrast is drawn between conceptions focussed on performance and evaluation and conceptions focussed on processes of development and self-recognition. A skills assessment, despite being called an assessment, is firmly within the latter perspective. This explains why it can be a useful tool in the management of the life path of individuals
