A review of: Derek S. Jeffreys, Defending Human Dignity: John Paul II and Political Realism (Brazos Press, 2004). 235 pp. $19.99. Jeffreys attempts to place Pope John Paul II's political philosophy into a critical engagement with political realism. He argues that the Pope's philosophy shares many characteristics with realismbut avoids realism's consequentialist trap. Young critiques Jeffreys' comparison of the Pope to Robert Kaplan, an inappropriate and unbalanced foil, and also Jeffreys' focus on classical realism and avoidance of structural realism. An interesting sequel would be to analyze John Paul's philosophy in light of structural realism, an argument that, being absent, leaves the book incomplete.
