The population aging experienced by mature economies raises the question of the employment of seniors. In Japan, where the financial imbalance of public pension systems continues to increase, the question of the preservation of this category of employees in activity is a major challenge for both the government and businesses. The first part of the article focuses on the incentive effect of the Japanese environment with regard to the issue of employment of seniors. The author studies the influence of socio-cultural context, legal framework of labor and social protection system on the extension of working life. The second part presents the practices developed by Japanese companies for the purpose of managing late careers
