This article explores coping strategies of seven refugee athletes, which have emerged after their forced migration to deal with their sport ambitions. A socialisation-based theoretical framework is used for analysing and interpreting empiric material collected in an ethnographic study. Particularly narrative interviews carried out between 2016 and 2018 are examined through a modified methodological approach from the documentary method. The results show that most of the respondents had high ambitions after the resettlement, which they modified and reduced within the three years of the project. Refugee athletes have developed different strategies to cope with their sport ambitions in the social context after their resettlement. These are the idealisation, which reinforces the sport motivation through the attachment of external meanings; the de-sportification, which strips competitiveness from sport; the postponement, which delays the start of concrete pursuing of sport objectives; and the abdication, which accepts and justifies the ceasing of a sport career. The discussion analyses the distribution of these coping strategies among the individuals of the sample and identifies a correlation between idealisation, abdication and a sport activity at a high level
