This contribution aims to clarify the term ‘precarity’. Indeed, precarity is often employed to mean poverty or new forms of poverty. In this article, the author distinguishes between precarity and poverty. Referring to French classical authors including Alexis de Tocqueville, Frederic Leplay, Emile Durkheim and Louis Chevalier, the extreme proximity between precarity and pauperism is demonstrated. While precarity can be confused with pauperism, it cannot be confused with poverty because poverty and precarity do not have the same contours. Precarity, more than a concept, is a paradigm. Social vulnerability, is no longer associated only with the experience of unemployment but also with the possibility of unemployment. In order to explain what precarity is, the contributor distinguishes two categories of vulnerable people – those who are liable to precarity and those who are already living in precarity. The author also sets out levels of vulnerability: high, medium and low. In discussing the experience of precarity, this study refers to the sociology of the Subject. Finally, although the example is French society, the author shows that precarity is not restricted to France
