This initial phase has been discussed by Shelly and Phillips (1966) as the social contact process. The social contact process is of particular importance in studies of group formation. A widely used experimental paradigm in the study of group formation has been the coalition-formation paradigm (Vinacke and Arkoff, 1957; Vinacke, 1959; Chertkoff, 1966).
