A considerable body of literature about legislatures in Canada developed in the ten years between 1967 and 1977. This essay discusses what the new literature has contributed toward the understanding of three aspects of legislators' roles, namely policymaking, representation, and political system maintenance. Like most new knowledge, the additional material has raised at least as many questions as it has settled. Thus, this essay points up aspects of Canadian legislators' roles which especially require further systematic study
