The Institute of Sociology was formed from the Sociological Society in London, founded in 1903. It was the first professional organization of sociologists in Britain and published a journal and a book series, and organized conferences. It brought together disparate groups and had a factionalized history through the 1920s and 1930s. It gradually declined in importance despite the growth of sociology as a subject, and it was finally wound up in 1955
