The pioneers of business anthropology—including W. Lloyd Warner, Conrad Arensberg, Eliot Chapple, Frederick Richardson, Richard Sayles, and William Foote Whyte—were students of American industry. Beginning in the early 1930s and working through the 1950s, these leaders of applied anthropology used the knowledge and skills of our discipline to solve urgent problems on the factory floor, especially problems related to labor-management relations and technological change. Since the focus of economic growth during this early period was industrial plant production in the United States, the first business anthropologists were concerned chiefly with domestic business operations
