L'A. etudie la critique de la theorie de la bienveillance et du sens moral de Hutcheson developpee par J. Clarke et A. Campbell a partir du principe de sympathie, d'une part, ainsi que la double reponse que Hutcheson leur adresse d'abord dans son «Essay on passions» (1728), puis sous la forme de modifications apportees a la seconde edition de son ouvrage «An Inquiry into the original of our ideas of beauty and virtue» (1725, 1738). Retracant l'histoire du concept de sympathie chez Descartes, Hobbes, Malebranche, Spinoza, Mandeville et Shaftesbury, l'A. montre que la position de Hutcheson, fondee sur la conception du mecanisme de la compassion chez Malebranche, s'oppose a celle de Locke et redefinit les conditions du bien, du desir, de l'amour et du bonheur en un sens qui annonce Hume
