Dostena Lavergne’s article provides a critical analysis of the European Union’s failure to establish democratic, cultural, and social integration following the fall of the Berlin Wall. The author offers an anthropological perspective on the issue through her field research in Bulgaria, Greece, France, and Europe in general, where she examines the influence exerted by think-tanks and globalized governance paradigms, primarily of North American origin, which have contributed to shaping European elites according to the principles of political privatization and transnational financial capitalism. Lavergne argues that even political, media, and artistic elites who claim to support Europeanism have favoured transatlantic integration, thereby compromising Europe’s political and cultural sovereignty. She highlights the role of think-tanks, which, under the aegis of American soft power, have undermined European governance models, leading to an identity crisis within European institutions. The analysis reveals that this dynamic is accompanied by an erosion of democratic control mechanisms, to the detriment of the humanist values and fundamental rights historically associated with Europe
