CALVET Louis-Jean - The 1964 UCLA Conference at the inception of Sociolinguistics. "Peripheral" linguistics or "all of linguistics" ? The meeting organized by William Bright in 1964 shows that sociolinguistics at the time looked like a network of young, mostly California-based linguists, working or having worked on situations of plurilingualism or diglossia. Some were connected, through Weinreich, to European linguistics (Martinet, Meillet, Saussure...). The network held together largely through its opposition to the other one, based on the East Coast (Chomsky), but had neither institutional backing, theoretical unity, leader or specific intellectual reference. And this theoretical weakness persists to this day
