1. Cited in Hans Borgelt, Das siif3este Maidel der Welt (Munich: Heyne, 1976) 164. 2. Documented in Joseph Wulf, Theater und Film im Dritten Reich. Eine Dokumentation (Frankfurt/Main: Ullstein, 1983) 346. 3. A 1933 reader poll conducted by the journal Licht-Bild-Biihne confirmed Harvey as Germany's number one female star, ahead of both Marlene Dietrich and Greta Garbo. See Licht-Bild-Biihne 1 (1. Jan. 1933). Cited in Lilian Harvey, ed. Christiane Habich (Berlin: Haude & Spener, 1990) 39. Moreover, Harvey who was born to British parents, but largely raised in Germany was already an international star. She had performed in several successful multiple language versions of her Ufa musicals (French, British, and German versions, which aside from Harvey, costarred different national actors), making her popular not only in Germany, but also in England and France. Readers of the French magazine Pour Vous, for instance, voted her the most popular non-French actress in 1932 (documented in Kinematograph 13 [20 Jan. 1932], cited in Habich 33). In addition, 52 percent of all foreign film imports on the American market came from Germany, among them, of course, Ufa's most popular films starring Lilian Harvey
