Quel est l’effet des enfants sur la stabilité des mariages et des cohabitations ? Comparaison européenne

Face à l’absence de statistiques officielles et d’estimations systématiques en Europe, cet article a pour objectif de décrire les ruptures d’unions cohabitantes dans les pays européens et de comparer la stabilité des cohabitations, en particulier avec un enfant, à celle des mariages. L’article étudie les unions récentes, cohabitations ou mariages, (formées après 1990) à partir d’informations rétrospectives sur les parcours de vie conjugale et de fécondité de l’enquête Générations et genre dans 14 pays européens. Des modèles de durée en temps discret sont utilisés pour l’analyse. Les résultats confirment que, dans tous les pays, les cohabitations sont toujours moins stables que les mariages, qu’il y ait ou non présence d’enfant. Contrairement aux prédictions théoriques, la différence de stabilité entre les unions sans enfant et les unions avec enfant s’est révélée plus nette dans les cohabitations que dans les mariages. Les cohabitations avec un enfant sont plus stables que les cohabitations sans enfant dans dix des quatorze pays, parmi lesquels, pour quatre d’entre eux, la différence est encore plus marquée que pour le mariage. Elle est aussi plus prononcée dans les pays d’Europe occidentale que dans la plupart des pays d’Europe centrale et orientale
