In the economic model of fertility childbearing is regarded as a type of utility maximization in which preferences for children are balanced against available resources and incurred costs. This model is here tested on data from a fertility survey taken in the city of Edmonton, Alberta. It is applied separately to eight ethnic groups in order to test for variations in its applicability. It is found to receive some support in three groups, but to be largely falsified on the others. That is, only in certain cases are rational life-planning decisions in the area of fertility carried out as predicted by the economic model. Other groups do not seem to maximize their utilities in this fashion. For the latter, it would appear that the social and normative context of fertility exercises a sufficient influence to make the economic model largely inoperative
