The consolidation of the new democracies in Southern Europe has brought about again the importance of legitimacy related issues. This article uses empirical data from a survey done by the Centro de Investigaciones Sociologicas, in 1985, in four Southern European countries, in order to do a comparative analysis of some perceptions of their authoritarian past, the existing levels of democratic support in each of them, and people’s assesments about the efficiency of their governments.
