The argument of this paper is that a liberal defence of school education is not compatible with demands for the exceptional exclusion of children from the exigiencies of compulsory schooling, such as the exception granted to the Amish in Wisconsin v. Yoder. The paper examines liberal political arguments which consider the value of education as purely functional to the citizens’ role. It argues that whilst this is important, it remains insufficient and inadequate as well. Rather, the liberal compromise with education should also accept its intrinsic value as part of a valuable life
