In bringing the canons of such diverse disciplines as anthropology, linguistics and ethnomusicology to bear on the study of Aboriginal song, the editors of this monograph have succeeded in providing a glimpse of the more holistic approach Margaret Clunies Ross suggests “Aboriginal singers and dancers bring to their art” (p. ll). The editors acknowledge that this approach is not new, 1 but that there still exists a need to emphasise it has been attested to in, for example, those land claim hearings “in which the ‘read[ing]’ of ‘evidence’ presented in the form of ritual displays, has required specialist collaboration”. 2
