Der Aufsatz verfolgt ein doppeltes Ziel: Es wird der Versuch einer Begriffsexplikation von Sozialprestige unternommen, und es wird eine Prestigeskala beruflicher Tätigkeiten vorgestellt. Prestige ist eine subjektive Variable. Gleichzeitig wird an sie in der Soziologie aber der Anspruch einer objektiven Strukturmetrik gestellt. In diesem Doppelcharakter von Prestige liegt die Schwierigkeit des Begriffs. Es wird der Standpunkt vertreten, daß diese Schwierigkeit nur dann bewältigt werden kann, wenn Sozialprestige nicht auf Individuen, ihre sozialen Rollen und Ausstattungen bezogen wird, sondern auf soziale Formationen, die sich durch Schließungspraktiken identifizieren und von einander abgrenzen. Eine solche Betrachtungsweise berücksichtigt die grundsätzliche Geschlossenheit im Prozeß des sozialen Positionserwerbs und weist subjektiven Prestigeurteilen eine kausale Rolle bei der Schließung und transitiven Hierarchisierung differenzierter sozialer Positionsniveaus zu. In diesem Sinne wird die Prestigeskala beruflicher Tätigkeiten (Magnitude-Prestigeskala, MPS) mit Hilfe einer neuen Skalierungstechnik und auf der Basis exemplarischer, repräsentativ erhobener Berufseinschätzungen als eine „Schließungsordnung“ konstruiert. Darüber hinaus wird die Konstruktvalidität der Skala in Statuserwerbsmodellen an zwei unabhängigen Datensätzen bestimmt
