As the introduction to The Study Quran makes clear, it is written from a faith-based perspective. Therefore, it will be reviewed as such. This book is a fascinating example of what could be termed the “next stage” in the publication of confessional literature that reflects the reception of the Qur’an by believing Muslims writing in English. During the twentieth and twenty-first centuries CE, a number of English translations of the Qur’an were carried out by Muslims holding various sectarian, theological, and other perspectives. Several of these translations also provide fairly detailed notes, which are primarily intended to explain and interpret the text with particular attention to issues likely to be of concern to contemporary readers. Such notes typically say little explicitly about interpretations given in classical works of Qur’an commentary (tafsīr), and when they do mention how one or another commentator interpreted a particular verse, they usually give little idea of how his exegesis relates to that verse’s history of interpretation.
