Both the philosophy and the practical use of Statistics have been receiving attention in statistical and research literature. Books by Savage (1962), Raiffa and Schlaifer (1961), and Schlaifer (1961) have provided much of the current thinking on the topic; articles by Hirshleifer (1961), Edwards, Lindman, and Savage (1963), and Anscombe (1961), to name only a few, have presented additional expositions. Mosteller and Wallace (1963) reported the results of a large-scale research study utilizing Bayesian methods. A comprehensive review is given by Binder (1964). In this paper we shall examine the use of Bayesian statistics in an educational setting. The illustrative problem is from Elementary Statistical Methods in Psychology and Education by Blommers and Lindquist (1960, pp. 268-69) and is reprinted below
