En las dos últimas décadas el interés de la Antropología por el estudio de las cárceles ha crecido notablemente, si bien la mayoría de la producción académica se centra en el ámbito anglosajón y/o está escrita en inglés. Partiendo de cuatro ejes temáticos: conexiones dentro/fuera, género, agencia y resistencia, y el carácter (pos)colonial de estas instituciones, este texto presenta, en diálogo con un breve estado de la cuestión, las investigaciones antropológicas que se incluyen en el monográfico, desarrolladas en un ámbito internacional (África, América Latina, Estados Unidos, y Europa), escritas o traducidas al castellano
