In recent years the management of human resources in Japanese enterprises has attracted a great deal of attention from abroad. With human resource management considered one of the key factors in the improvement of productivity and the quality of goods and services, and in light of Japanese success, the transferability of various elements of the Japanese system has become a subject of considerable interest. In many ways, India is an ideal subject for an examination of the transferability of managerial know-how from Japan. One of the government's main objectives is to industrialize and modernize the Indian economy, and to achieve this Indian firms have been encouraged to enter into collaborative agreements/joint ventures with firms in other advanced countries. During the period 1957-1981, the Indian government sanctioned 562 collaborative agreements with companies in Japan. At the same time, business enterprises in India are confronted with most of the problems encountered by firms in other developing countries; thus the problems associated with transferability of Japanese managerial practices to the Indian industrial environment will have broad implications for developing countries in general
