GEOGRAPHY deserves a place in the picture of Russian scientific advance which has lately rocketed into the public consciousness of the West. The last few years have witnessed an increase in the output of Soviet geographical writing to a point where it is at least as voluminous as that of any other country. At the same time there has been a notable trend towards more objective appraisal of foreign work and the beginnings of academic travel abroad. A growing academic consciousness has been associated with a greater tendency to look up from practical tasks, embark upon more purely cultural aspects, and, above all, to argue about the content and theoretical framework of the subject, its emphasis and prospects. This paper attempts to examine the character and significance of this expansion of Soviet geography and the direction it appears to be taking
