The fable presents a multiplicity of voices in La Fontaine. Reported discourse plays a particularly important role. It is not possible however to establish a specific pattern for each one of the different kinds of reported discourse in the Fables. The narrator puts different voices on stage which, mixed with his own, help construct the meaning of the fable. Indirect free speech, which is particularly innovative in La Fontaine, illustrates the tendency towards synthesis which is characteristic of the author
