A brief survey of the use of the words « tradición » and « erudición » in Herrera's Anotaciones, in Cervantes's Quixote, in Covarrubias's Tesoro, shows that Góngora makes quite a novel use of these words in his Soledades (and other works). His challengjng of tradition and érudition is also a sign of an important innovation (the lady nearly vanishes from the poem and is replaced by a new object of lyridsm) and of a paradox : by refusing tradition, Góngora pays his highest homage to it
