Since the 1980s, a number of Chinese scholars and activists have worked together creatively to develop a women's studies field that (1) focuses on unresolved issues embedded in the approach of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to gender equality, and (2) responds to the negative consequences of China's economic reforms on women. The fruits of the so-called women's studies movement include a large selection of new publications, many stimulating conferences, the establishment of women's studies centers in universities, and the emergence of women-centered nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). The movement has also brought about a diversity of efforts to present and re-present Chinese woman, a task that until recently was the sole preserve of the CCP State and the All China Women's Federation
