THIS study of three closely related types of taboo words is based upon individual lists compiled by 361 students (166 men and 195 women: juniors, seniors, and, about one fourth of the number, graduate students) in an introductory course in the English language at Emory University.' The purpose of the study, which has extended over a period of more than ten years, was to throw light upon the language consciousness of college students and to reveal how and why certain types of words drop out of a language.
