“The true artist is someone who exists within his society.” Farid Belkahia, artist and director of the School of Fine Arts in Casablanca, rejects the stereotype of the superiority of the artist. “No one is more exceptional than the man in the street. I only help him discover himself.” The interview printed here affords an insight into one of Morocco's leading artists. He tries to break from restrictions both academic and artistic. In his art he has evolved from a painter of canvases to a creator of copper bas-reliefs as he wrestles with the essential nature of his medium. In his administrative role he attempts to eliminate the restraints of a traditional art curriculum in order to allow young artists freedom of expression and experimentation
