The study of christianizing elements in Marseille's landscape (bell-towers and façades of religious edifices, toponymy, statuary in public and private buildings, chapels, oratories and crosses) raises methodological problems but allows one to define a chronology whose two high-points seem to be the 17th and 19 th centuries. Their geographical location favorizes high ground, crossroads and urban vistas as well as a strong concentration of Christian references in the familiar places of urban culture. Finally, the study points up initiatives by laymen who were benefactors of sanctuaries but also builders of chapels and oratories
