In 1789, transfers of land and real estate reached an all-time high in the Narbonne region. The nobility and to a general extent the city suffered heavy losses. The study is based on an exhaustive analysis of land transfer tax registers for Narbonne between 1721 and 1790. It shows that this phenomenon was not simply one of circomstances tied to the pre-Revolutionary economic and social crisis but that it was the high point of a long process at least three-quarters of a century old
