Discusses the 'metarealistic' narrative strategy employed by Castro, 'the purpose of which is to unlock the gates of alienation'. Argues that the strategy 'essentially consists in evoking two worlds, that of Shan and of Seamus, which, taken separately, are incomplete, mutilated, alienated. Only when they are joined together and made to coincide does completeness appear—hinted at rather than fully realised, but still tantalisingly present
