This address was presented at the 2005 conference of the American Psychological Association in Washington, DC. In this address, the author discusses person-environment fit as a fulcrum concept that is assumed to influence a wide variety of psychological phenomena ranging from satisfaction to performance to personality consistency to subjective well-being. Limitations, contemporary models, applied implications, and issues are discussed. In conclusion, he suggests that we need longitudinal work of all kinds to study the dynamic developmental interaction between the person and the environment and to more effectively understand the person-environment process and outcomes for the individual
