Poetic games have received little attention in North American journals devoted to teaching French as a foreign or second language. Widely used since the early 1970's in France and Quebec in French classes for native speakers, poetic games aim to sensitize students to the potential richness of language through activities in many cases derived directly from practices of modern poets. These poetic games explore not only phonological and graphic components of words and texts, but also personal and collective (cultural) associations and connotations. As such, they can play an important role in maximizing the affective dimension of foreign language learning. An inventory of poetic games is included, with examples in French and English. These activities would be equally valuable for teaching other languages
