Georgia State University is ideally located for a program in Translation and Interpretation. Government buildings, international finance and business offices, the Georgia World Congress Center, and the Merchandise Mart are all within short walking distance of its Atlanta campus. Academically Georgia State is best known for its business school. The Institute of International Business and the World Congress Institute are also part of the institution. When the chairman of the Department of Foreign Languages first conceived the idea of the program in Translation and Interpretation, her department had recently implemented a new commercial track for the study of French, German, and Spanish at the undergraduate level. Location and the academic orientation of the institution were the two most important factors which influenced our choice of this type of program. Location prompted the decision to offer two complete certificate programs, one in Translation, the other in Conference Interpretation
