The sociologist who today writes about 'class' in general and in toto, says T. H. Marshall, may soon find that he is shadow-boxing with a down pillow. Even his most vigorous mental strokes are liable to be smothered in the clinging embrace of this infuriating subject which so stubbornly resists all attempts to knock it into shape. At the present moment we shall gain more from a fresh examination of the parts than from the repeated contemplation of the whole.'
