f onstrate the many difficulties inherent in decoding an archaic Romance dialect p served in Ar 9_. abic and Hebrew poems from Medieval Spain. A concomitant aspect to this unique literary survival has been the lack of an appropriate poetic corpus with which to analyze the jarcha in a comparative fashion. The present study approximates such a comparative approach through a tentative search for Latin inscriptions that convey an elegiac vision and for literary texts that reflect a popular, love-oriented, description of Roman life and manners, in which words, phrases, and themes are similar or parallel to expressions found in jarchas. This investigation has a twofold purpose: first, the possibility of establishing jarcha readings on the basis of supportive Latin evidence and, second, of testing in this way the generally assumed European ancestry of the jarchas.1
