The dynamic processes of geology, geomorphology and meteorology are the 'natural perils' of the insurer. Such perils continue to do damage and generate high insurance costs. As a result insurers are taking steps to limit their future losses. Three strands of geographical research are relevant here: (i) research into the dynamic events; (ii) analysis of the business management systems used by insurers to cope with natural peril events; and (iii) the perceptions held by insurers of these perils. A better understanding of the dynamic processes can reduce the insurance problems that arise out of responding to perceptions rather than to reality. The physical geographer has a distinct (consultancy or educational) role in providing such an understanding
