The Role of Inselbergs in the Geomorphology of Southern Uganda

THE INSELBERGS of southern Uganda are situated in an area whose surface has experienced uplift and warping in the recent past. These surface deformations are the result of tectonic influences which, since the end of the Oligocene, have produced the Western Rift Valley. The purpose of this account is to define the nature of the inselbergs which occur within this recently warped area, and to examine their relationship to the post-Oligocene warping. This analysis is approached through an assessment of the relationship between the inselbergs and the planation surfaces of southern Uganda. The area with which this account is particularly concerned lies to the west of Lake Victoria (Fig. I). The floor of the Western Rift Valley is the lowest feature in this area. It is separated from the higher, warped, area to the east by a scarp which is usually between I50 and 300 m high. In the area to the east of this scarp (Fig. 2) there are two major planation surfaces; these have been termed the upland and lowland landscapes.1 Between the upland and lowland landscapes the higher inselbergs rise to an intermediate level. This suggests the presence of an inselberg relief horizon, or inselberg landscape, which lies between the horizons provided by the two planation surfaces (Fig. 3)
