A sample of letters of recommendation regarding job applicants or staff members in view of promotions were rated independently by senior professors at an institute of higher learning. Results show a general tendency on the part of judges to disagree with regard to the value of the letters. Most candidates had letters covering a relatively wide range of values. No relationship was found between the kind of university and the kinds of letters written by its members. Favorable letters were in general longer than unfavorable ones, but the longest letters were ambiguous. Knowledge of the quality of the university seems to improve the favorability of rating, and judges differ widely in their styles of judging
