First it is recorded that the concept of mountain includes those of volume and altitude. The low geomorphical limit of the high alpine mountain can be defined as the upper limit of the forest stage. For the last hundred years, this limit has been moving according to climatic changes and economic factors. In the Alps, the high alpine glaciated mountain and the high rocky mountain, partially covered by snow and glaciers, are described. In the northern part ofthefrench Alps (44° latitude), periglacial phenomena allow us to distinguish a typical periglacial stage, between 2300 — 3000 meters, with sorted soils on small horizontal surfaces where the mean annual temperature is between 0° С and -4° C. In the infra-periglacial stage (1800 — 2300 meters), the main processes of evolution are that of running waters, fluviatile actions and snow melt waters. But in the supraglacial stage (3000 — 3800 meters), the processes are freezing, gelifraction, solifluxion, and the movement of« temperate glaciers » Figure 2 shows that the place of the typical periglacial phenomena are related to well-defined climatic limits. Now, the most active geomorphological activity is found between 2400 and 3200 meters
